Substitute is a status Normal-type move. It uses 25% of the user's maximum HP to create a Substitute; if the user does not have enough HP remaining, the move fails. The Substitute will then take damage for the user until it runs out of health. Any damage over the maximum health of the Substitute is blocked, but multi-strike moves will continue attacking after a Substitute is broken. Substitutes do not protect the user from damage from effects such as confusion, recoil, weather damage, or a Life Orb.
While a Substitute is up, many Status moves, including those that inflict status conditions or lower stats, are blocked as well as some secondary effects from moves such as Knock Off, Thief, or Dragon Tail. Preexisting status conditions and lowered stats persist after a Substitute is created. Moves used by a Pokémon with Infiltrator bypass Substitutes, as do the following:
- Sound-based moves
- Attract
- Curse
- Destiny Bond
- Disable
- Encore
- Foresight
- Grudge
- Guard Swap
- Haze
- Imprison
- Odor Sleuth
- Psych Up
- Role Play
- Skill Swap
- Spite
- Taunt
- Torment
Substitute is contained within TM90, which is located in Victory Road.
